Tension is the story here with red and dark fruits pulling against each other, tannin and acid coiled tight and sweet and savoury spice threading through a long, intense palate. Then, gradually, it yields: the grip softens, the fruit opens into something brambly and juicy, and the finish lingers with an elegant concentration that promises a long life. |

Precision plus meets effortless refinement. It might have been a challenging vintage in the Valley, but there’s nary a sign of it in this extraordinary, lovely young Cabernet. Elevated aromatics in blackcurrant, plum, ripe black berries, dried herbs and understated florals of violet and sweet vanillin oak. The palate is pure velvet with Cabernet dark fruits front and centre with a strong support network of spice, anise, dried herbs, vanilla, earth, hints of Aussie bush and menthol. It’s a powerful mix of concentrated flavour, impressively integrated in its youth, and delivered smooth and long. What a gorgeous wine, a potent reminder of the undeniable relevance and suitability of the grape in the Valley.

Pinot noir and chardonnay often receive most of the accolades from the Yarra Valley, but in seasons where cabernet can ripen fully it can be exceptional. This wine is a superb example. It is elegant, refined and beautifully composed. The aromas are a seductive mix of cedar, leafy blackcurrant, red berries and a subtle charcuterie complexity. The palate is superbly concentrated, with powerful fruit harnessed by fine chalky tannins and quality oak. It remains youthful and tightly wound, but the concentration and balance suggest a long future ahead. A cabernet of real structure and purpose that showcases just how good the Yarra Valley can be.

100% cabernet sauvignon matured in French barriques (20% new). All Coldstream fruit from two vineyards. A deep, bright ruby garnet. With its bouquet of blackcurrant, cherry skins, cedar, fresh pencil shavings and a touch of iodine, there's a dark intensity to the fruit. Really good depth on the nicely structured palate. A classic medium-bodied cabernet, but one that's also built to last. Drink this now and cellar with confidence for at least a decade.

Dusty bay leaf, blackcurrant, Australian bush and blue-collar savouriness. It is still closed, as I drink it, a decant (or a few years in the cellar) will bring out more joy. In the mouth the tannins are excellent: roaring, chewy and commanding. There is a touch of eucalyptus, a lovely character to see when softened by juicy plum fruit.
