New Release

2022 Single Vineyard Y28 Chardonnay

A special parcel of Chardonnay from our Y28 block. These Single Vineyard releases are site expressive wines where we as winemakers take a back seat to let their unique terroir do the talking.

This Chardonnay starts delicate and restrained, with a crystalline minerality and delicate florals. Concentration builds with a Nectarine and grapefruit pith, mineral purity along with a lovely texture and weight that carries a long finish.

Professional Reviews

The vine age sits around 22 years for this Mendoza clone, and it spent 9 months in 2-4 year seasoned 500L puncheons. A Chardonnay that feels unadulterated as far as Chardonnay’s go. Of course Brendan Hawker has probably agonised over barrel origin and picking times but that’s what you feel from this Single Vineyard. What you get is sunflowers, lemon cream and white peach skin. Lilies of the Valley, sea shells and buttercream icing. A great example of why malolactic is not needed when the grape provides a slew of richness and energetic texture. Acidity is washing and agile without being sharp. A fantastic wine that’s a true pleasure to drink, and will cellar well for another 3-5 years. Drink alongside Cacio e Pepe as nothing more is needed to make this shine.
The Yarra Valley brought its A Game to Chardonnay in 2022 in what was a challenging year. Yes, there were spring rains which affected flowering and, yes, there were cool conditions in the lead up to vintage, but 2022 is considered a stand-out for the grape. Off a single vineyard, Y28 celebrates the Valley’s plush, luscious, complex side of Chardonnay. Citrus blossom aromatics aplenty, stone fruits, lemon and grapefruit, pure and far from simple – more like captivating. A wine of substance that wields a leesy, nougat, cashew winemaking note, while delivering a fine line of Chardonnay fruit rich in lemon, grapefruit and lively stone fruits.
Hand picked from the westerly facing Y28 block that has been a key component in Yering Station's reserve chardonnays for the last 10 years. No new oak, no mlf. Bright green gold. Continues Yering Station's recent good form. Refined and complex stone and orchard fruits intermingle with gentle marine scents and a little grilled cashew. Saline, tightly wound and long, this is going to need at least another six to 12 months, if not longer, to fully unfurl.
