THE 2023 SEASON

The 2023 season began cooler than average, delaying budburst. In line with a persistent La Niña pattern, the spring was exceptionally wet. October alone delivered over 220mm, our wettest month on record. Vineyard access became a logistical challenge; at times, any tractor entering a block required another on standby for a likely rescue from the mud.

As the season progressed, the rain eased. A dry, mild January followed, marking a stark shift from the saturated spring. February brought welcome rain, enough to replenish soils and sustain vine health leading into harvest.

A notable exclusion from this year’s Reserve trio is a Shiraz Viognier. Every year, we continue to stay true to our philosophy and only present Reserves that are worthy of wearing their label with pride. Shiraz parcels were impacted by the wet conditions late in the 2023 season and cooler April temperatures. While aromatically beautiful, they lacked the depth and structure expected at our Reserve level. Rather than compromise, these components were retained in our self-titled Yering Station blend where their perfume and elegance truly shine.

2023 YERING STATION RESERVE CHARDONNAY

Crushed hazelnut and cashew layer with just ripe yellow nectarine and lemon salt. Crisp lime phenolics provide a beautiful line to drive this incredibly complex and refined Chardonnay through to the lingering finish.

97 POINTS | PHILIP RICH, HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION
"Engaging from the first whiff with its bouquet of orchard fruits and cashew, with a hint of vanillin and white flowers. This has good presence and power on the youthful and tightly wound palate, finishing saline and long."

97 POINTS | SHANTEH WALE, WINE PILOT
"Superlative is the adjective of choice. This is a bright posy of star jasmine, honeysuckle centre and bee pollen. White nectarines bathed in vanilla syrup, jiggly lemon curd tart and whipped nougatine. The innate power is wrapped in the filigree of restraint with citrus blossom taking the lead, long lines of mineral spring freshness and the auxiliary of subtle oak. It’s devine and will cellar well in a wine fridge for another 10 years plus. If you can’t wait, drink it now with manchego triangles and buttered baguettes. It simply does not need any competing, fussy dishes, this is purity in its finest Yarra Valley form."

2023 YERING STATION RESERVE PINOT NOIR

Ripe red apple and strawberry compote are guided through the palate by fine light spice and velvet tannin. Ever evolving in the glass, this fine Pinot Noir displays elegant intensity and power.

97 POINTS | PHILIP RICH, HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION
"An impressive yet backward bouquet featuring aromas of red and black fruits, rose bush scents and dark spices. Excellent depth on the medium-bodied, concentrated and very well-balanced and structured palate. Just a baby, but an extremely promising one at that!"

97 POINTS | SHANTEH WALE, WINE PILOT
"Pomegranate seeds, rhubarb and morello cherries. A black fig heart wrapped with soft licorice and cardamom pod. Be witness to the might of sandy tannins, rooibos tea astringency and some mace and white pepper spice. This is just finding its feet and promises to be brilliant in both perfume and alluring crunchy red fruits. Drink now and you’ll enjoy it no doubt, lie it down in your cellar and try at 5, 8 and 12 years and you’ll be on a journey of discovery and awe. A befitting match for pigeon or liver pates."

2023 YERING STATION RESERVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Deeply concentrated in flavour and tannin, yet so structurally fine this wine flows through with an ethereal elegance. The finish persists with an autumnal perfume of fallen leaves and fading floral giving freshness and grace, drawing you back in for more.

97 POINTS | PHILIP RICH, HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION
"98/2% cabernet sauvignon/merlot matured in French barriques (16% new). All Coldstream fruit from two vineyards. The palate is both super elegant yet with good depth and persistence. Svelte tannins ensure this will age gracefully over at least the next 10 years, if not longer."

97 POINTS | SHANTEH WALE, WINE PILOT
"This is stunning now, shockingly so! ...Yes there is the framework for another decade in your cellar but you absolutely must try this now, if only just to gauge just how bloody stellar it’s going to be in say 8-10 years. I am shooketh, this is the beauty of Yarra Cabernet and it’s pretty hard to beat. Serve with milky slivers of Hanwoo beef, lightly charred and wonder why we ever deviated from cool climate Cabernet and beef."
