Tasting Notes
Light garnet red. |
|
Crushed strawberries, ripe cherries and delicate pink florals dance around a complex line of freshly tilled earth. |
|
Pretty red fruits fill the front of the palate which extends to reveal darker, more brooding elements. Lovely, fragrant spices build along with the gently firm yet supple tannin profile. The finish is expansive; full of complexity, energy and deep satisfaction. |
|
Drinking beautifully now but will also reward patient cellaring over the next 10+ years. |

This wine comes from a barrel selection of the best batches from Blocks Y07 and Y13. The fruit was carefully treated, gravity-fed into small open fermenters, and gently plunged and pumped over. Maturation was in French puncheons (about 16% new) over 10 months. It’s a silky, fine, and effortless wine beginning with an exotic mix of cherry, plum, and bright red fruits on the nose. Lots of spicy strawberry notes and even a touch of crunchy red apple on the palate, with a faint, muted background of light truffle. Fine but firm tannins and precise chalky acidity support a wine of tremendous power and remarkable elegance.

Matured in 16% new oak and the balance up to 5 years of age for 10 months. You’d scarcely guess that it’s the workhorse clones of MV6 and Abel at play here, given the dignity and sophistication the 2023 Reserve unfurls on the nose. They may be the backbone, but they’ve been kissed with all the refinement and poise that define Yering Station. Pomegranate seeds, rhubarb and morello cherries. A black fig heart wrapped with soft licorice and cardamom pod. Be witness to the might of sandy tannins, rooibos tea astringency and some mace and white pepper spice. This is just finding its feet and promises to be brilliant in both perfume and alluring crunchy red fruits. Drink now and you’ll enjoy it no doubt, lie it down in your cellar and try at 5, 8 and 12 years and you’ll be on a journey of discovery and awe. A befitting match for pigeon or liver pates.

Mostly estate fruit. 100% whole berries with a small number of whole bunches. Matured in mainly French puncheons (20% new). A bright crimson purple. An impressive yet backward bouquet featuring aromas of red and black fruits, rose bush scents and dark spices. Excellent depth on the medium-bodied, concentrated and very well-balanced and structured palate. Just a baby, but an extremely promising one at that!
