Yering Station is a proud certified member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, in both our winery and our vineyards.
We care for our land not only for the wine it produces today, but for the generations who will shape its story tomorrow.
We believe careful stewardship is inseparable from quality. Healthier soils, balanced vines and considered vineyard practices allow our fruit to express greater purity, detail and site character in every wine.
About Sustainable Winegrowing Australia
Sustainable Winegrowing Australia is a collaboration between The Australian Wine Research Institute, Wine Australia and Australian Grape & Wine. The voluntary program takes a holistic approach to activating sustainability across complete winery operations. It is modelled on global best practices and aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with progress monitored annually.
In Our Vineyards
All five of our sites are drip irrigated, providing us with precise control over water management. Each vine has its own dripper, targeting the base of the vine to ensure minimal wastage.
We conduct regular soil tests to understand exactly what each site requires, applying inputs accordingly to ensure no wastage and to unlock full block potential.
During the dormant period, all vines are hand pruned. Cane prunings are mulched back into every second mid-row, while the remaining mid-rows are sown with clover, barley, vetch and other cover crops. This improves soil structure, prevents erosion, delivers nitrogen and supports beneficial insect life
During vintage, all grape marc is composted over 12–18 months before being reapplied under vine. This compost also includes organic waste from our restaurant kitchen and recycled cardboard from our cellar door.
We grow and cut our own hay, which is incorporated into our composting program. It is also spread under vine as mulch, helping retain soil moisture and reduce weed pressure.
Periodically, our team and volunteers replant native species across the Yering Station estate in partnership with TreeProject and the Yarra Ranges Council’s Ribbons of Green program. This diverse mix of native species will help restore habitats, stabilise soils, improve water retention and create a more balanced and resilient environment for both the region and our vines.
In Our WINERY
Our winery is now powered by solar, with a total installed capacity of 250kW, covering our site’s daylight energy requirements on average.
We select cleaning agents that are more environmentally considerate, reducing the need for water-intensive rinsing protocols
We use non-potable water for general washdown, along with water-efficient pressure washers and nozzles to minimise water use.
We choose cellulose-based additives that inhibit tartrate crystallisation, instead of using traditional cold stabilisation which is energy-intensive. This greatly reduces refrigeration demand and electricity consumption.
