Description

Intense red and black fruit. Rich and powerful yet elegant and graceful. Fine grain tannins provide texture and support, finishing with incredible length. It will gain greater complexity as it slowly ages. 2015 was an exceptional year. A classic Yarra Valley growing season: a wet spring followed by moderate daily temperatures and cool nights. Perfectly balanced vines allowed the grapes to ripen in optimal conditions. In these reserve years, the pristine fruit flavours combined with intensity and power give the wine balance and longevity.

This wine comes with a limited edition Yering Station gift box.

Medium red colour with a purple tinge. The bouquet is floral and pleasant in a pot-pourri-like way, with some metallic and ironstone notes. Complex and compelling. There is a slight alcohol or VA (volatile acidity) lift in the mid-palate, but it’s not a concern. The wine is concentrated, powerful and profound, and deserves to be cellared before drinking. It will certainly live long. The concentration and depth of sweet, ripe cherry fruit is very impressive. An outstanding pinot.

For the stat geeks - fruit off four sites, hand-picked, destemmed with whole berries into small open top fermenters, aged in French oak puncheons 35% new for 11 months. For the flavour junkies, this is a beautifully subtle and detailed wine. Finesse and elegance it’s drivers with silky fine tannins neatly threaded through the barely medium-bodied palate, refreshing acidity and a delicate mix of spiced cherries.

This finely-crafted wine is incredibly shy at first with gentle strawberry tones. However, with a lot of air, it slowly opens up to reveal layered red fruit and a surprisingly opulent mid-palate. It is in a very primary state right now; almost singular in expression. Though I expect it will evolve majestically. It is elegant in stature, though the fruit expression is simply glorious. Decant if drinking young. Though it really needs time in the cellar to metamorphosise and bloom.

Pale ruby purple, the 2015 Pinot Noir Reserve offers red currants and underbrush on the nose with suggestions of lavender and dried herbs, plus a touch of soil. Soft with nice backbone, there's good depth and length on the palate. Fantastic value. Drink: 2016-2021

(Made with whole berries and aged in French oak barrels, 25 percent of them new, for a year) Deep vivid red. Ripe red berries, incense and candied flowers on the expansive, seductively perfumed nose; a smoky mineral accent adds vivacity. Sappy, alluringly sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering juicy cherry, raspberry and vanilla flavours along with a zesty Asian spice nuance. Fine-grained and seamless in texture, finishing with impressive power, resonating spiciness and smooth tannins.

Now with a $120 price tag, Reserve is really reaching for the stars. Track record, good vineyards, strong brand delivers that ability. Funny thing is, to be editorialising, when I think about Yering Station I think ‘cheap, good value pinot noir’ and ‘fancy, high end chardonnay and shiraz’. That’s likely just me. Mind’s eye stuff. Elegant pinot without a hair out of place. Glides in the palate, delivers potent fragrance, fine tannins tighten the wine up and a pool of cool acidity to close (amongst fruit, spice, oak) suggests ‘hold onto me for a while’. Clove and twiggy woodiness woven through red cherry and cranberry fruit characters. Inward concentration. A whiff of old campfire and a slate-like mineral vein. Reminds me in a way of Faiveley’s vibe. Anyway, this wine goes to show Yering Station has the goods.
