New wine to the Yering Station range. 23-year-old vines. 95% shiraz, 5% viognier. Spread and run. This is a terrifically well-structured and flavoured red wine. Sweet spice notes dive headlong into plum; smoked cedarwood glosses over kirsch; garden herb notes run into the brightness of the viognier. It has the flavour and the mouthfeel but it’s the tannin that really elevates; the final stages of this wine are A Class in anyone’s language. Great persistence. Cracking tannin. A meaty, smoky, alluring aftertaste. Pretty special.

With 5% viognier, vines averaging 20 years old, 100% destemmed, matured 18 months in French barriques. A medium and bright crimson purple. Aromas redolent of cranberry raisins, raspberries and lifted violets from the viognier. Medium bodied and very nicely put together, this elegant wine is gentle and creamy textured and finishes long with very fine, supple tannins.

Another newie from Yering Station, a single vineyard Shiraz to match the single vineyard Y28 Block Chardonnay. Here, the level of Viognier is turned up to 5% and there’s fruit aplenty to enjoy. This is a robust example of ripe fruit which is well structured by some delightfully smooth and integrated tannins. The colour is purple and strikingly bright. The perfume is pure blood plums, chocolate and a long shopping list of spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, Chinese five spice. It’s pretty intense and topped off with a lick of smoky oak. It sets the scene well for flavours that move into sour cherry with just enough of a touch of tartness before more of the
gentleness of spice and oak. Slight dryness to the finish, but I suspect it is still very early days for this youngster. It’s yet to really open up.

Vibrant purple and ruby tones in the glass. Ripe blueberry and plum aromas, some sweet spices as well. Dark plum and anise spices fill the palate, there's a dark earthen undercurrent as well. Tannins are equal to the fruit power, and they dry the long finish well. A powerful red that will benefit from cellar time.

This also has a small amount of Viognier which seems to merge on the nose with those subtle but distinctive spicy gingery, apricot notes. The palate is soft and medium bodied but oh, so complex, and revealing. There’s a little dark plum, a little licorice and plenty of spiciness to brings life into the mouth feel. A beauty.
