Description

Named Yering Station Scarlett, this wine celebrates the legacy of our technical viticulturist Nathan Scarlett (1975-2013). Utilising the latest and most advanced viticultural research, his pioneering work in the field of precision viticulture led us to isolate the most exceptional parcels of Pinot in our vineyards used in producing this wine.

Scarlett is only ever produced in the most outstanding vintages when our winemakers are truly convinced they have captured the essence of exceptional Pinot, and this second ever release follows the first, highly acclaimed 2013 Scarlett Pinot Noir. Seemingly effortlessly, the 2015 manages to express the intensity and complexity of this wonderful, sensual and elusive variety.

Crafted in extremely limited quantities, the real magic of this wine is in its inherent purity and balance, driven by the special patch of dirt where this fruit is grown.

Tasting Notes

Colour
Bright berry red
Nose
There is an intensity and purity that is immediately noticeable on the nose. The bright raspberry and dark cherry fruits are at the fore with a perfumed lift of purple florals and rich, briary spice.
Palate
The palate begins with fresh red berries and fine silky tannin, but this gathers momentum and complexity until it reaches a crescendo of power with dense dark fruits, firm tannins and an explosion of savoury spices, forest floor and wild roses. The finish is long and immensely satisfying and you’re left wanting more. Seldom do we see such elegance and grace. The femininity and beauty leaves you in awe. The real magic in this wine is in its inherent purity and balance, all of which is driven by the special patch of dirt where this fruit is grown, identified by Nathan Scarlett.

Named after Nathan Scarlett (1975-2013), who was doing great viticultural things in the Yarra Valley, by many accounts. It’s made from selected vines within Yering Station’s “A” Block vineyard. This block is all MV6 clone, on its own roots. Not sure of the vine age here but you’d imagine around the 20 year mark, give or take. It was 100% destemmed. Production was two 500 litre French puncheons. Needless to say, 2015 was one of the great years in the Yarra Valley for pinot noir. It’s not a showstopper. It’s not flashy or eager-to-impress either. Its deep, tannic and stewy in a brooding way. It is built to cellar. It’s encrusted with spice, folded with cloves, a touch reductive and unmistakably firm. Yes there are strawberried notes but deeper, darker, macerated plums and cherries are in control. The finish is pure earth and mineral, almost into rust. You’re blowing your money by drinking it now; it needs bottle age, and a good deal of it.

Elegant and perfumed, this youthful and pristine pinot unfolds a heady scent of rose petals and small red cherries and berries knit with fresh cedar/vanilla oak. There’s a hint of five spice and a whiff of dried herbs. Surprisingly generous and succulent, it’s long and lively, with a luscious presence of vivacious fruit and fresh oak deftly entwined around a gentle but genuine spine of pliant tannins. There’s length and drive aplenty, along with the promise of more richness and depth with bottle age.
